Prepare yourselves for the ultimate lesson in what I’m calling the “Kondo-effect”. As in Marie Kondo of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Ever heard of it? If you’ve shopped at The Container Store or read any of Martha Stewart’s publications, you’ve likely brushed shoulders with a copy of the New York Time’s best seller. Marie’s book outlines a unique method of managing clutter that is truly inspiring yet none the less elusive to me. Jamie Lyons has no such problem.
The home she shares with her photographer husband Brock is bright white, open and spacious and completely, utterly clutter free. It’s quite the thing to behold! As Jamie would describe it, she decided to recreate the beauty, attention to detail and simplicity so often found in styled photography in her own home and wardrobe. No more ugly appliances or obnoxiously branded containers. No more shelves lined with unnecessary chotchkies or drawers brimming with excessive clothing. One color palette – in Jamie’s case, black, white and the occasional grey or gold. Only the beautiful, the useful and the absolutely essential. When an aesthetic is edited so diligently, a little goes a long way which means that in addition to having fewer things, Jamie has been able to invest in nicer things. You know the bit… fewer but better. I could get on board with that.
So, what does life-changing tidiness look like? Join me on a tour of Jamie’s home and wardrobe and I’ll show you.
Tune in next week to hear my conversation with Jamie on the podcast. She’ll dive deeper into why she’s chosen a minimalist (and vegan!) lifestyle, how she achieves such a clean aesthetic, where she shops, and what she believes has helped make her a successful fashion stylist.
