Shopping for the holidays seems a petty privilege in light of recent world events. I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering if there’s any good out there anymore or if our world has just become horribly and irreparably demented. Of course, I know the answer. There IS still good in the world and it’s something we can actively choose to promote and support. Most of the time I feel rather inconsequential when it comes to making changes to greater world problems. I’m just one woman… one undeservingly privileged woman who has been blessed with very few serious hardships in her life. So, I think a lot about how I can positively impact those less fortunate with the way I live my life. After some thought, I’ve concluded that holiday shopping is a powerful opportunity to make a difference!
We’re all going to buy presents for one another, so why not purchase our gifts from companies that pay a fair wage to their workers and consider their environmental impact, from small businesses that empower recovering victims and support the growth of those less privileged, from independent artists who are building livelihoods for themselves and their families and, in so doing, sustain a tradition of hand-craftsmanship and small-batch trade. We can make a powerful and positive impact just by how and where we choose to buy!
So, today I’ve put together a gift guide showcasing some of my favorite companies doing just these things. Hopefully it will help you find some thoughtful gifts for your friends and family as well as equally thoughtful purchases to help our fellow man.
